    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday (October 12, 2024), weather forecaster Sadiq Attia published a video clip showing the amount of pollution in the capital, Baghdad, while revealing the existence of an agreement between merchants and owners of large lands to burn copper, brass, and electrical cables.
Attia wrote in a post on his personal account on the Facebook platform, which was followed by Baghdad Today, that the smoke emanating from the burning and burial sites is a special burning ball used by traders of iron and copper materials, electrical cables and wires, and it produces the smell of sulfur, as some of the prohibited materials are war materials or delicate electronic devices, as well as chlorine and mercury bottles, which causes great harm to the environment and humans.
He explained, "As I have received, the pollution sites are located at the end of the Al-Ubaidi area, towards the presidency, the Diyala Dam and Shatit strip, the same smoke towards Al-Amari, Al-Bawiya and the Thermston factory, the same smoke towards Al-Dura, the Diyala Bridge and Al-Saydiyah, in addition to the municipal landfill sites."
He added, "All that matters is that there is an agreement between scrap and recycled materials traders and some owners of large lands to exploit the night time and the lack of security and environmental supervision, as well as the greed of landowners and their leasing of land to material owners for the purpose of using the land as a burning and recycling site or extracting materials for the purpose of selling them. Yes, the greed of landowners made them rent an area of, for example, 500 for a week or ten days for 300 thousand. So where is the state and its agencies’ supervision of these traders!? And why are the landfill sites near residential lands!?"
Attia pointed out that, "This pollution causes skin diseases, allergies, asthma, and suffocation, in addition to cancer in the future. Who is responsible for following up on it?"
Meteorologist Sadiq Attia revealed yesterday, Friday (October 11, 2024), that the  AQI pollution levels map in Iraq indicates high values.
He said in a post on his Facebook account, which was followed by "Baghdad Today", that "the map of  AQI pollution levels in Iraq, including the capital Baghdad, indicates high values exceeding 150-225 mg/m³!!"
He added, "These values exceed by about 18-24 times the health limit permitted in the atmosphere according to the World Health Organization [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] . "
Attia attributed the reason to "the increase in activities that are harmful to the environment, the most important of which are oil refineries, factories, car exhausts, and burning waste."
On Tuesday, the first of this month, the smell of sulfur spread in the air of several areas of the capital, Baghdad.
Residents of the capital Baghdad usually notice a foul sulfur smell in the air from time to time, due to the presence of brick factories south and east of Baghdad and those spread in random areas in the cities of the middle and southern Euphrates, which use primitive methods that are harmful to the environment in their industries.
Sadiq Attia Sadiq Attia had previously confirmed that environmental pollution maps indicate that an increase in the amounts of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere of Baghdad reached about 60 mg/m, which caused the spread of a foul odor similar to the smell of sulfur in the sky of the capital, Baghdad.
