Parliamentary Foreign Affairs cmte, FM hold meeting

    30/12/2012 | 04:31 PM | Kuwait News

    KUWAIT,
Dec 30 (KUNA) -- Foreign Affairs Committee in the National Assembly
discussed on Sunday with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah a number of issues, including
the results of the recently-concluded GCC Summit that was held in
    Bahrain.

Committee Chairman MP Saleh Ashour said in a press statement
after the meeting that the committee was briefed by Minister Al-Khalid
on results of the Summit, in addition to regional issues in Syria, Egypt
    and other Arab countries.

Ashour added that the MPs also discussed
with the Minister Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations and recent agreements, whether
related to the continental shelf or maritime navigation in Khor
    (waterway) Abdullah and other conventions.

    He said the meeting also
discussed extensively Kuwaiti-Iranian-GCC relations, as well as
    Iraqi-GCC-Iranian ties
and the latest developments in the region in
    general.

He stated that the committee has not yet received the draft
security agreement, which was signed by the GCC leaders, however, he
said that the foreign minister had stated that such agreement would be
submitted to the Council of Ministers and then be sent as a decree to
parliament for discussion by the relevant committee to prepare a
detailed report before being submitted to the parliament.

    He noted in
this context that the meeting did not address articles of this security
agreement, saying that the minister had said that the agreement is
different from its predecessor as some amendments have been made on it
so as to conform with special nature of each GCC state, especially in
Kuwait, as some articles are inconsistent with the Constitution.

    The
MP said that some amendments were made on certain articles of the
agreement, "but as yet it was not brought before the MPs for discussion
and we cannot express our point of view or a formal opinion on this
    subject."

He pointed out that the conferees agreed to hold another
meeting and invite the foreign minister after discussing the agreement's
articles by the National Assembly's relevant committee. (end)
