The absence of a UN Security Council resolution condemning a suspected chemical attack in Syria this week that killed at least 70 people is a scandal, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday.
"The use of chemical weapons is a war crime," Merkel told a news conference in eastern Germany. She said there were signs that the forces of President Bashar al-Assad carried out.
"The Security Council's decision is not a scandal and those who oppose it should think about the responsibility they bear," the German chancellor said.
She declined to explain a comment by US President Donald Trump that the attack "went beyond a red line."
