Trump hints at withdrawal from FTA with South Korea

    03/09/2017

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump said he would discuss with his advisers this week the fate of a five-year free trade agreement between the United States and South Korea, a move that could see Washington withdraw from the pact with a key US ally at a time of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Trump made the remarks to reporters during his visit to hurricane-hit Houston, one day after he spoke with South Korean President Mon Jie, and reached an agreement that would allow Seoul to acquire long-range missiles as well as possibly sell arms to it.
Trump often criticized the US-South Korea Free Trade Agreement reached by his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama.
In earlier interviews, Trump threatened to withdraw from what he called an "unequal agreement," in which the US trade deficit with Seoul amounts to about $ 28 billion.
Asked if he would talk to his advisers and do something about the deal this week, Trump said: "This is in my mind very much."
The US Chamber of Commerce said in an e-mail message to its members that it and other trade groups "received multiple reports" that Trump is preparing to notify South Korea of its intention to withdraw from the FTA on Tuesday and possibly sooner. sf
