US President Donald Trump described his country's regular military exercises in South Korea as "fireworks" in defiance of his decision to stop the exercises unilaterally.
"It's a war game, I hated it from the first day I took power, we pay a lot to finance it, we pay millions of dollars for the planes," Trump said.
"I said that I wanted to stop it because it's bad to negotiate and do those exercises. It saved a lot of money, and that's good for us."
The US president said Friday that he had "solved the bulk" of the North Korean nuclear issue after his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
He said that former President Barack Obama told him before taking office that "the most serious problem" for the United States is North Korea's nuclear weapons program, adding: "I have solved that problem, the bulk of the problem has been resolved."
After the criticism he has faced in recent days, Trump announced that his historic summit with Kim on June 12 in Singapore allowed for the launch of a "strong verification" of dismantling the North Korean arsenal.
"When I got to the presidency, people thought we were going to go to war with North Korea, they thought Trump would come and start dropping bombs everywhere, but the reality was the opposite," Trump said.
"All I can say is that I signed a credible document, it is great and it will be great for you as well because North Korea can now develop and become a great economic country, it can become what it wants, but there will be no nuclear weapons."
