[ltr]The German foreign minister said on Saturday that if the United States cancels Iran's nuclear deal or reinstates sanctions on Tehran, it could push Iran to develop nuclear weapons and increase the risk of war near Europe.[/ltr]
[ltr]US President Donald Trump on Friday refused to formally ratify Iran's commitment to the agreement signed in 2015, although UN inspectors said so. He threatened that he would cancel the agreement once and for all.[/ltr]
[ltr]German Foreign Minister Ziegmar Gabriel told Deutsche Presse-Agentur Fonk that Trump had sent a "tough and dangerous signal" when the United States was also dealing with North Korea's nuclear crisis.[/ltr]
[ltr]"My big concern is that what happens in Iran or with Iran from an American perspective will not remain an Iranian issue, but many in the world will think if they themselves should have nuclear weapons, because such agreements are canceled," he said.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Then our children and grandchildren will grow up in a very dangerous world," he said.[/ltr]
[ltr]He said that if the United States canceled the agreement or re-imposed sanctions on Iran, it would give the conservatives in Tehran, who oppose to negotiate with the West, the upper hand.[/ltr]
[ltr]"Then they may turn to the development of nuclear weapons," he said, adding that Israel would not accept it and "we will return to where we were 10 or 12 years ago with the threat of war relatively close to Europe."[/ltr]
[ltr]He urged the United States not to endanger the security of its allies and people for local political reasons.[/ltr]
[ltr]US President Barack Obama praised the nuclear deal and said it was important to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb.China, France, Russia, Britain, Germany and the European Union signed the accord.[/ltr]
[ltr]European allies have warned of a row with Washington over the nuclear deal, saying it would undermine US credibility abroad.[/ltr]
[ltr]Trump gave the US Congress 60 days to decide on re-imposing economic sanctions on Iran after it was lifted in 2016[/ltr]
