     Follow-up / Sky Press:

Washington has decided to allocate $ 60 million to support the joint force of the five Sahel countries (Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Chad) to combat terrorism and extremist groups in the Sahel.

This came in a statement delivered by Washington's representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Nikki Healy, on Monday, before a meeting of the UN Security Council on the Sahel African region.

In July, the five countries announced the creation of a joint force to combat terrorism and extremist groups, based in Mali, Bamako.

At the beginning of its establishment, the Force established an annual budget of € 423 million.

"The United States supports the initiative of the five Sahel countries to develop a common force, deepen cooperation that can improve security, and complement the efforts of the peacekeeping mission in Mali," she said.

"To that end, the United States will continue its long-term bilateral support for the security forces of the Group of Five," she said.

"We are working closely with our partners to help the G-5 force be an effective and well-coordinated force aimed at counter-terrorism efforts in the region," she said.

"We are proud to announce today that we plan to provide up to $ 60 million in bilateral assistance to help the joint force."

"The approach that will ultimately be more effective in ridding the region of terrorism requires that the G-5 force be first and foremost owned by the countries of the region itself," the US ambassador stressed.

She said that her country "expects that the G5 countries will take full territorial ownership of the force within three to six years, with the continued participation of the United States."
