Russia on Thursday warned the United States not to interfere in Iran's internal affairs and accused Moscow of trying to exploit popular protests in several Iranian cities to derail Iran's nuclear deal.
"I want to remind American colleagues that the primary responsibility of the Security Council is to maintain international peace and security," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.
"The internal affairs of Iran, like any other country, have nothing to do with the role of the Security Council," Ryabkov said. "It is regrettable that American colleagues need to be reminded of the basic rules of diplomacy again," the official Russian news agency Tass reported.
"We warn the United States against attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran," Ryabkov said, calling on the United States not to take any steps that would hinder the continuation of positive and fruitful cooperation with Iran on its nuclear program.
"What is happening there is an internal matter that attracts the attention of the international community, but despite repeated attempts to distort the image of what is happening in Iran, we remain confident that this neighborly and friendly country of Russia is able to overcome the current difficulties and emerge from the status quo as a strong Numerous problems, including the implementation of the international agreement with Tehran over its nuclear program.
