In addition to $ 6.3 billion in new financial commitments in the past fiscal year, the Bank also provided a wide range of analytical products to help countries in the region develop their economies and lay the foundations for overall growth and job creation.
The World Bank said in a statement that standard lending commitments included $ 5.9 billion from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), which supports development activities in middle-income countries, and $ 430 million from the International Development Association (IDA) - the Bank's fund to help the world's poorest countries.
World Bank knowledge services included support to high-income countries in the region through cost-effective advisory services.
The $ 55 million program in the past fiscal year supported efforts to diversify the activities of economies and promote private sector development while supporting human development through the reform of basic public services such as education, health and social protection.
"We are committed to helping the region overcome its challenges and reach its full potential," said Fred Belhadj, World Bank Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa.
In the next phase, we will focus on youth in the region, particularly on developing their capacity to harness the power of new technologies and building an active and innovative private sector that can become a new source of growth and job creation. "
The World Bank's regional strategy for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) aims to promote peace and stability by rebuilding trust between citizens and their governments, enhancing regional integration, strengthening capacities to cope with the effects of instability, and supporting recovery and reconstruction efforts whenever possible.
In line with this strategy, the Bank's work in the last fiscal year included $ 500 million in support of public education reforms in Egypt, a $ 200 million project in Morocco to link farmers to markets, and a $ 225 million project to expand public transport services for Syrian refugees, In Lebanon, and an additional $ 400 million in funding for an emergency project in Iraq aimed at rebuilding infrastructure and restoring services in liberated areas.
"We will continue to be guided by this strategy while acknowledging that the budgets of the countries of the region are under enormous pressure and that the private sector should play a much larger role in financing investment in critical infrastructure," Belhadj said.
In light of our successful partnership with Egypt to attract billions of dollars in private sector investment in the energy sector and the country's success in ending the electricity crisis that has affected citizens and businesses, we are working with the governments of the region to create the right conditions to mobilize private financing. "
The Bank's current portfolio of investments stands at US $ 17 billion in the Middle East and North Africa, covering a variety of sectors such as agriculture, energy, education, environment, health, social protection, trade and transport.
