The Iraqi Ministry of Planning announced that 70 percent of the census and numbering work in Kirkuk province has been completed.
The general population census in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region is scheduled to be conducted on November 20 of this year, and the phased implementation of the process has begun.
The spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Planning, Abdul Zahra Al-Hindawi, said, "The population census process is going very well in Iraq, and 70 percent of the census and numbering work has been completed in Kirkuk province," explaining that the process is similar in most Iraqi provinces.
He added, "We have high-level coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government," indicating that "last week, a delegation from the Statistics Authority of the Kurdistan Regional Government was in Baghdad, while a delegation from the Iraqi Statistics Authority visited the Kurdistan Region earlier."
It is noteworthy that the Council of Ministers of the Kurdistan Regional Government held its meeting on September 26, during which the general population census was discussed.
In the aforementioned meeting, Minister of Planning Dara Rashid and Chairman of the General Authority for Kurdistan Regions Outside the Kurdistan Region Fahmi Burhan highlighted the latest preparations for the census process, and expressed their observations, concerns and risks regarding the method and purpose of the process.
After the discussions, the Kurdistan Regional Council of Ministers stressed that it is not against conducting a general census, but the census should not be used for any political purpose, and should not replace any constitutional procedures stipulated in Article 140 of the Constitution. The
Kurdistan Regional Council of Ministers tasked the Ministry of Planning and the General Authority for Kurdistan Regions Outside the Kurdistan Region with conveying the observations, concerns, proposals and recommendations of the Kurdistan Region to the relevant authorities in the federal government.
The census and numbering will include all Iraqi governorates and the Kurdistan Region for 60 days. The process began in Iraq at the beginning of this month, but the Kurdistan Region has observations on it and the process has not yet begun.
The Iraqi government has planned to conduct a general population census since 2009, but many factors have prevented it from being conducted.
According to the Ministry of Planning, the population of Iraq will exceed 51 million people in 2030.
