Minister of Water Resources Hassan al-Janabi called for the establishment of a sea channel extending from the Gulf, which is characterized by brackish water to the Sea of Najaf or Al-Razazah lake west of Karbala province.
"It will save Iraq from major bottlenecks in drinking water, stop the expansion of the desert, and develop the Iraqi economy," Janabi said in a press statement.
He explained that "the project to establish the sea channel from the Gulf across the desert towards the Sea of Najaf or Lake Al-Razara is one of the strategic projects that I call for it," adding that "will save Iraq from bottlenecks in drinking water through desalination."
He added that "this project will develop the Iraqi economy in the provinces of the south, as that channel navigation will be used for the transport of goods and will be a real window to create a lot of employment opportunities, and will provide a basic limit prevents the expansion of the desert."
