China's military line expanded at "tremendous speed"
Satellite images have revealed the extent and speed of China's massive expansion of a military shipyard, while Beijing is speeding up the construction and construction of warships.
A recent study showed that China has carried out large and important expansions on a warship shipyard over the past few years, confirming China's efforts to become one of the world's largest naval forces.
Satellite images showed that the shipyard expanded 64 per cent over 2011, and at least 18 warships were observed this year.
The shipyard, Jiangnan, which opened in 2008 on Changxing Island in Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze River, is one of the most important shipbuilding plants in China.
The Jiangnan Basin is home to some of the most sophisticated warships, according to an analysis by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies ( CSIS ).
According to US government reports, the basin produced about 32 warships between 2016 and 2017.
The satellites have captured some highly developed vessels in the basin, but are still being manufactured, including destroyers carrying missile interceptors 055, the most advanced warships in Asia.
In June last year, a 10,000-ton modern destroyer was built in this basin, equipped with modern air defense equipment and other anti-missile, anti-submarine and anti-ship weapons.
