International Justice issues its verdict today on the issue of Iranian funds frozen in America
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday issued a ruling on frozen Iranian funds in the United States demanded by Tehran, while Washington says it should pay victims of terrorism.
The US Supreme Court ruled in 2016 that Iran should pay the money to survivors and their relatives for attacks that Iran accuses of carrying out, including the bombing of the Marine headquarters in Beirut in 1983, according to Agence France-Presse.
Wednesday's ruling threatens to fuel oil between the two countries after a previous court ruling in October ordering the United States to exempt humanitarian goods from sanctions imposed on Iran.
Iran said the US decision was a breach of the friendship treaty between the two countries signed in 1955, before the Islamic revolution in 1979, which led to severing relations between the two countries.
In the latest pleading on Iran's appeal in October at the Hague-based court, Washington said Iran's hands were "stained" and its alleged support for terrorism should lead to the rejection of the case on the ground.
The International Court of Justice is the highest court of the United Nations, established after the Second World War to resolve disputes between Member States. Its provisions are binding and can not be challenged, but they have no means of enforcing them.
The United States announced hours after the decision to withdraw from the friendship treaty, which Iran also relied on in the sanctions issue. Finished
