Karuizawa (Japan) - The International Energy Agency (IEA) has expressed its deep concern over developments in the Gulf of Oman following the attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz, which would pose a major threat to the security of world oil supplies.
"The attacks on two carriers in the Gulf of Oman threaten world energy security," Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Friday.
Attacks on the two tankers on Thursday raised concerns about a drop in crude flows on one of the world's major shipping routes, pushing oil prices up 4.5 percent.
"This is a major concern for global energy security, for global oil security and global energy markets," Perol told reporters. "We are watching the events very closely," he said, adding that the agency was ready to act if and when necessary.
With rising international concern about oil supplies, Saudi Arabia is committed to providing world markets with "reliable" oil supplies, and Saudi Energy Minister Khalid al-Faleh said Riyadh had stepped up preparations to deal with any threats following two attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf.
Al-Falih condemned the attacks on the two carriers, one carrying methanol from Saudi Arabia, in the Gulf of Oman.
The attacks came in the wake of attacks last month on four ships, including two Saudi oil tankers, off the United Arab Emirates.
"The kingdom will take the measures it deems appropriate to protect its ports and territorial waters," Al-Falih said in a statement published by the official Saudi Press Agency. He called on the international community "to assume its responsibilities to protect international maritime shipping".
He added that the Ministry of Energy in the world's largest oil exporter and state-owned oil giant Aramco raised "the level of readiness to deal with such acts of hostility and terrorism."
In the context of the developments of the incident, the head of the shipping company operator of the Japanese oil tanker that was attacked, "two bodies of birds" later damaged the tanker but did not cause any damage to its cargo of methanol.
Kokuka Caridgues, the head of Coca-Cola-Sangio, said at a press conference in Tokyo that the tanker Kokuka Karidghes was sailing to the Khorfakkan port in the UAE after the crew returned. He said the US Navy was escorting the tanker.
"The crew told us that a flying object approached the ship and found a hole," Katada said. "Then some of the crew saw the second strike."
Catada ruled out that the ship carrying 25,000 tonnes of methanol was hit by a torpedo. He said the crew saw an Iranian warship in the area on Thursday night.
