Since its launch in early October of last year, the Iraqi protest movement has been associated with various forms of repression, varying between murder and prosecution, but kidnapping and assassination have been deterrent factors for prominent activists, often.
And an official count shed light on a large outcome of the assassinations and kidnappings carried out against demonstrators and activists by various parties, all of which were seeking to protect the government of the resigned Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, in the face of great public anger.
In the first week of October, the activist Maitham Al-Helou, a dermatologist, disappeared in mysterious circumstances.
Those close to him said that the matter was related to the demonstrations, and then after about two weeks, the targeting started almost openly, as prominent activist Shuja'a Al-Khafaji was kidnapped from his home in the capital [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] in full view of the security forces.
Iraqi activists recount how their colleagues were assassinated and arrested, as they tried to get out of Tahrir Square, the center of the main protests in the capital, Baghdad, to check on their families. It was not easy to determine the kidnapping, because most of the military and security agencies that possess arms in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] were involved. In suppressing protests.
The escalation against the militants reached its most intense, by kidnapping a female activist who was returning from Tahrir Square to her home in Al-Bayaa, south of Baghdad.
The activist, Saba Al-Mahdawi, was known for her great efforts in providing medicines and medical supplies through donors of voluntary medical teams in Tahrir Square, where the protestors treated the government’s bullets and gas canisters.
The kidnapping of al-Mahdawi lasted more than 10 days, before her release, to disappear entirely from view, leaving many questions behind about the methods used by the kidnappers to intimidate the activists and silence them completely.
After the Mahdawi incident, assassinations and kidnappings turned into a dominant feature of government behavior against the protests in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Basra, Nasiriyah, Karbala, and others, but the accusations were secretly directed at private groups, which are often not official.
The most prominent accused of carrying out the first kidnappings against the activists and demonstrators was the head of the security forces in the Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Zainab al-Lami, who was allegedly assigned a special force to track down the activists who were moving in the protest squares, and directed the killing, kidnapping and threatening of a number of them.
When pressure on the PMF intensified due to these accusations, he was said to have dispensed with the Lami, who in turn disappeared from view. However, the government has not yet submitted a single suspect of these murders and arrests to the courts.
From the point of view of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, "assassination attempts, kidnappings and attacks on demonstrators are a flagrant violation of the human right to life and security and a restriction of freedom of opinion, expression and peaceful protest."
Describing the commission as the most daring official body that faced government repression of the protests, it insisted on announcing the numbers it gets regarding the numbers of dead, wounded, kidnapped and detained among the protesters, ignoring the wrath of Abdul-Mahdi and the pro-Iranian militia leaders.
In the last official toll, issued at the end of the week regarding the kidnappings and assassinations witnessed by the protest movement, a member of the Commission for Human Rights, Fadhel al-Gharawi, said, "The commission has documented 49 cases and attempted assassinations and 72 kidnapping attempts involving demonstrators, activists and bloggers since the first day of the demonstrations" on October 1, 2019.
The Commission also documented, through its observational teams, "50 cases of beatings, threats, inhalation of tear gas, attacks of many satellite channels, breaking of equipment and preventing media personnel from taking their role in covering the demonstrations".
