The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities is implementing
34 water projects distributed among the country's governorates, revealing that the number of people served from its networks has reached 20 million.
The Ministry of Planning had announced earlier that the country's population in 2020 exceeded 40 million people.
The Director General of the General Directorate of Water, Eng. Najm Al-Hayali, said in an interview with Al-Sabah newspaper, which was seen by Al-Iqtisad News, that his directorate had prepared the necessary plans to implement a large number of water projects in a way that would ensure an increase in the percentage of people served and the elimination of any water shortage that occurs in the country.
He revealed that "the number of people served from its project networks in Baghdad and the provinces, except for the Kurdistan region of Iraq, amounted to 19 million and 939 thousand citizens," referring to the increase in the number of served to "plans and projects of the ministry to provide drinking water," noting that "the number of projects currently implemented by the ministry has reached 34, of which 26 projects are ongoing, as there are projects that have achieved advanced completion rates and will be opened soon, especially in the liberated areas, in addition to the presence of projects that began the actual pumping of water experimentally.
Al-Hayali warned that “there are eight lagging projects that have not achieved advanced completion rates,” attributing that to “the financial crisis and the lack of disbursement of funds and allocations to the directorate in addition to the security conditions for some areas, in addition to the Corona pandemic and what caused the exit and stoppage of work in some of them.”
Stressing, "the directorate's endeavors to obtain the necessary financial allocations in order to include a number of new water projects within its plan and achieve the largest percentage of serviced services, especially since the directorate has mobilized all its efforts to solve any problem facing the projects it implements."
