A senior Iraqi military official said, Saturday, that "Iraq does not need any American or foreign soldiers who carry weapons and fight with the Iraqi forces."
The official Iraqi News Agency quoted the spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasoul, as saying that Iraq "does not need fighters on the ground, except for the Iraqi forces."
Rasoul added that the scheduling of the withdrawal of foreign forces from the country "is determined by the technical committees within the strategic dialogue" between the United States and Iraq.
Rasul added that his country is working with NATO to train and equip Iraqi forces, stressing that "Iraq has trained forces that can defend the homeland and the people."
The words of the Iraqi military official come after statements attributed to the commander of US forces in the Middle East, Kenneth Mackenzie, in which he indicated that Washington is not currently planning to start a similar withdrawal of its forces from Iraq as is happening in Afghanistan.
"There have been discussions about this (withdrawal) with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, but the efforts of Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIS are not over yet," the Military Times newspaper quoted McKinsey as saying.
The United States has led the international coalition that has helped Iraq fight ISIS since 2014, and has deployed about 2,500 soldiers in the country.
On the seventh of this month, the United States and Iraq resumed the "strategic dialogue" aimed at setting a timetable for the withdrawal of the international coalition forces from Iraq.
On the other hand, Yahya Rasoul referred to the attacks carried out by pro-Iranian militias against Iraqi military bases hosting US forces or advisors and trainers of the international coalition.
Rasul said that investigations are continuing on "the issue of targeting headquarters, airports and international missions with missiles and pursuing the sources of bombing," adding that "announcing the results is left to the Supreme Military Command."
He pointed out that "targeting the airport or any area with missiles, which are not smart missiles, that fall on Iraqi military installations and bases, and Iraqis are killed."
Rasul added, "The Balad Air Base is 100% Iraqi, and the targeting operations are not in anyone's interest."
He pointed out that "the fact that some armed groups did a certain movement or show, this is an incorrect message," stressing that "the Iraqi armed forces are able to establish the security situation, but they are dealing wisely in order not to be drawn into clashes."
On Thursday-Friday night, three missiles fell at a military base at Baghdad Airport where Iraqi and American forces are stationed, resulting in the injury of an Iraqi soldier, in the latest episode of the ongoing series of tensions between the United States and Iran on Iraqi soil.
This is the second missile attack targeting US forces in Iraq in less than a week, as another military base north of Baghdad, Balad base, was hit by five missiles on Sunday, resulting in five wounded, including three Iraqi soldiers and two foreign contractors.
No party has adopted this new attack, but Washington often attributes the attacks targeting its forces or diplomatic headquarters in Iraq to armed groups loyal to Iran.
This brings to 23 the number of attacks targeting with missiles or bombs, bases housing US military or US diplomatic headquarters in Iraq, since President Joe Biden's arrival at the White House on January 20.
These attacks reached a new level in mid-April, when Iraqi factions loyal to Iran carried out an attack with a booby-trapped drone targeting an American military base at Erbil airport in the Kurdistan region (north), in the first attack of its kind.
