    The ancient city of Ur in Dhi Qar is preparing to receive the largest pilgrimage trip of 13,000 Christian pilgrims to visit the birthplace of the Prophet Abraham and perform the Abrahamic prayer soon, while 10 missions will begin their excavation work in the cities of Ur, Eridu, Larsa and the ancient kingdom of Lagash in the governorate.

    Director of the Dhi Qar Antiquities and Heritage Inspectorate, Amer Abdel Razzaq, told the official newspaper, and "Nass" followed him (July 1, 2021), that "the head of the Christian Tourism and Pilgrimage Foundation, Remo Capavarini, agreed with Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein during his recent visit to the Vatican to organize these trips."  
      
    He added, "This trip is the largest Christian pilgrimage in history to the archaeological region of Ur, the birthplace of the Prophet Ibrahim, as it includes 13,000 pilgrims, and it will pave the way for regular Christian pilgrim trips every month."  
      
    Abdul Razzaq pointed out that "the local government, in coordination with the Antiquities Inspectorate and the government, has taken important steps to rehabilitate Ur in preparation for this trip and the trips that follow, which included starting projects to develop roads leading to the surrounding archaeological areas, while planning to establish service facilities, including hotel houses, malls and parks."  
      

    He pointed out, "These trips are of great importance in reviving the reality of tourism in the province, which includes the largest archaeological sites in the world."  

      

    In a related context, Abdul Razzaq pointed out that "10 American, French, German, Russian and Slovak excavation missions, in addition to the Italian mission now operating, have been agreed to conduct excavations in the archaeological cities of Tel Zargl and Larsa."  

      

    He explained that "the missions have made surveys on the aforementioned sites, and it is hoped that their work will start next October and will last for three months, while two American and German missions will begin their work during the next period at the site of Tell Al-Haba (Kingdom of Lagash), in addition to the French mission specialized in exploration, which will start Her works are also in the ancient city of Kresu.  

      

    It is noteworthy that the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities, Hassan Nazim, had announced earlier during his visit to the governorate last May that among the ministry’s priorities was the development of the tourism reality in the city of Ur and the Marshes, through the implementation of short-term projects that provide the basic needs of tourists such as rest houses, kiosks, and service and health facilities, so that the opportunity To try to bring in tourist groups, especially after the visit of Pope Francis I to Iraq, which included the ancient city of Ur in the Dhi Qar governorate.
