Faw port opens wide horizons by attracting manpower before its completion

Baghdad / Hussein Hatem
Work is underway on the Faw port project, which is one of the largest ports on the Arabian Gulf and the tenth in the world. The project is scheduled to be completed over a period of three years and six months.
The project attracted a lot of Iraqi labor force about three years before its opening, and these hands are working continuously on the mechanisms and equipment in the port, while the Korean company Daewoo relied in its work with different nationalities only on the technicians it needs.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Transport, Hussein Al-Khafaji, said in an interview with (Al-Mada), that "the Korean company is continuing its work at the Faw port for 24 hours, hoping to complete it within the specified period," noting that "the port will be an important economic project that will save Iraq and supplement its budget."
Al-Khafaji added that "the port of Al-Faw is a strategic project that will link the east to the west through the dry canal," noting that "the depth of the port of Faw will be more than 19 meters."
Upon its completion, the port will make Iraq the main station in the international land and sea road project "Silk Road" linking the continents of Asia and Europe.
In 2019, Daewoo Engineering and Construction won a contract worth $86 million to construct a yard equipped for a tunnel project in Iraq. Under the contract, the company will build a yard equipped for a tunnel under the waters of Khor Al Zubair by next October.
The project is a link between the Arab Gulf countries, which are consumers of foreign goods, as it is a link with Turkey, which is a major consumer of oil and at the same time the main source of goods, so it is expected that the Faw region will become a link linking a number of parties with each other.
Director of the Media and Relations Department at the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Anmar Abdel Moneim Al-Safi, says that “the work is taking place in a large way and with different mechanisms and equipment to implement the tunnel through a huge work as it is the only one in the Arab Gulf region and even in the Arab region, where there is no tunnel in the region that passes through Under the water, as the tunnel passes under the Khor Al-Zubair canal.”
Al-Safi added, "Work is underway to complete other internal roads leading to the port of Faw, especially after the arrival of (the giant equipment) that works to improve the quality of the soil and install the pillars to build the berths of the great port of Faw as planned without any delay or obstacles that may hinder work." He pointed out that "the work, according to the speculative timing allocated to it, will be completed in full and according to the plan prepared for its completion within approximately 3 to 4 years."
And the director of the media and relations department in the company indicated, "Work is underway in its first phase as planned to build five berths with its infrastructure, as it was completed in accordance with the contract signed with the Korean Daewoo Company, the Ministry of Transport and the General Company for Ports of Iraq," noting that “In the last phase of work at the port, about 100 berths will be completed.”
And Al-Safi said, "The Al-Faw port project has attracted large Iraqi labor, as all the workers now on the machinery and equipment in the port are Iraqi hands," noting that "the Korean Daewoo company relied in its work with different nationalities only on the technicians it needs." In turn, the expert in economic affairs, Rashid Al-Saadi, believes that "the port of Al-Faw will serve the Iraqi economy a very great service upon its completion, as Iraq's strategic location in relation to neighboring countries and the Silk Road."
Al-Saadi added, to (Al-Mada), that "one of the advantages of the Faw port is that it will be an alternative to the ports of (Godar) and (Jebel Ali), in addition to employing manpower, and reducing the costs with which imported goods reach Iraq.
And he asserts, "The Al-Faw port makes Iraq in a strong and competitive position for the neighboring countries, as it will affect the scaling of their economy."
Al-Saadi points out, "Most of the neighboring countries are trying to obstruct the implementation of the Faw port project so that it does not strike their economic interests," noting that "the Faw port project will be a major resource alternative to oil if there is a real political will."
Earlier, Minister of Transport Nasser Al-Shibli confirmed that the work will be completed within the specified times under the contract concluded with the Korean company, while noting that the authority responsible for monitoring the implementation of the contract is the Ministry of Transport, as it is the sectoral entity benefiting from this project.
Last April, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi laid the foundation stone to start the construction of the first phase of the project, which includes 5 container berths, digging the internal navigation channel, and constructing the highway between the ports of Faw and Umm Qasr.
