, the Ministry of Transport announced today, Saturday, the details of the railway link project with Turkey, while setting the date for the start of implementing the suspended train.
The Minister of Transport, Nasser Al-Shibli, said that "there are no discussions with Turkey regarding the railway connection," noting that "there are talks with an Italian company to develop the basic plans for this line, which will start from the port of Faw in Basra Governorate and reach the Turkish border."
He stressed that "this line is vital and strategic, as it will revive the port of Faw," explaining that "the decision of the Council of Ministers has been obtained, and now the ministry is in the process of discussing with the company and signing a contract with it to start developing the final designs for the project."
And regarding the suspended train project between Al-Shibli, that "the project was among the projects of the year 2021, and there is an agreement with the Minister of Planning to include it in the 2022 budget, and the contract will be signed, as it is ready with a consulting company to study the technical and commercial contracts," stressing that "the implementation will be through two companies." French and Korean specialists in this field and are ready to work within 5 years with soft loans.
He added, "The cost of the project is estimated at less than two and a half billion dollars, and it will be among the upcoming projects for 2022."
Regarding the Faw port project, he pointed out that “the port of Faw and the dry canal, one complements the other,” noting that “work has begun at the port of Faw, and it will be completed within 3 years and 6 months with the dry canal, and that the ministry is now in the stage of preparing designs and there are many companies. Turkish, Spanish, Italian and Chinese are ready to act."
With regard to public transportation, Al-Shibli confirmed that "the ministry has nearly 800 single- and two-decker buses, but there is a problem that there are not enough drivers to drive them," stressing that "the ministry has only 200 drivers."
He added, "He decided to approach the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers to obtain a decision to appoint drivers with contracts or daily wages to work on those buses."
Regarding private transportation to Baghdad Airport, Al-Shibli indicated that “the ministry tried to prepare cars to transport passengers to the airport, but it did not succeed in doing so,” noting that “there are companies inside Baghdad Airport that transport passengers to and from the airport via small cars, while Basra Airport was opened so that The traveler enters to a place close to the terminal. Therefore, in the future, the ministry will increase these wheels to transport passengers.” Ended 29/h.
