Exactly in the middle of the night the fat man lowered the clamp, pressed the shoe of the lock, and left. With the help of a streetlight, inside loomed three ghosts of workers who had to spend the night in the closed restaurant until its owner came back and opened it at eight in the morning.
Three friends in their early twenties came from Suq Al-Shuyoukh district in Dhi Qar to Baghdad to work in a fast food restaurant in Karrada area for low wages. The three of them are assigned to serve the hall, clean the restaurant, and spend the night there in the dark so that they can save on transportation and avoid spending on overnight stays in rented rooms.
The people of the southern provinces come to Baghdad to work. Most of them are without education and work in humiliating or difficult occupations and their wages are lower than the Bangladeshi workers. They are forced to do so because they are ashamed to engage in these businesses in their original cities and also because of the low returns compared to the capital, Baghdad.
The three friends are prohibited from lighting the restaurant after closing, and they eat leftovers, which are usually pieces of falafel and a sauce that is not tender, with appetizers that have lost their freshness and acidified. The owner of the restaurant allows them to drink water with an egg sandwich or fried eggplant in the morning and at night when the fat man closes the restaurant to them and they spread on the floor of the hall a piece of squishy squishy pieces that they sleep on. They avoid the kitchen because its musty smell is unbearable and cockroaches, mice and rats abound.
People from the provinces usually do not come to Baghdad with business ideas and big dreams. They do not know of life but a full stomach. They accept the minimum available and leave their families and cities for months to collect the money and take it back to their homes. Most of them are those who support large families and have women and children at their back.
The three friends did not think of any accident that could happen to them at night while they were prisoners in the restaurant. They are actually happy with this because it saves them money. They are very happy with him, and they see that the owner of the fat restaurant is kind-hearted and kind and merciful.
