With equipment, some of which are more than 70 years old, the Qayyarah Oil Refinery produces more than 6,000 barrels per day, and it is the oldest refinery in Iraq.
The refinery is now operating at half its capacity, after it was almost completely destroyed during the war on the terrorist organization ISIS.
Azzam Saadi, director of the Qayyarah refinery, said, "The refinery consists of 4 operational units, and is currently working in the third and fourth units," noting that "the design refining capacity of each unit is 4,000 barrels per day, and high production capacities have been reached, as more than 6 thousand barrels per day.
The Qayyarah Oil Refinery is one of the most important specialized facilities in Iraq, and it produces various types of asphalt, in addition to gas oil and an oil mixture used in operating large factories.
According to international experts, the asphalt produced by the refinery and extracted from the Qayyarah oil wells is among the finest in the world.
Saadi said that “Al-Qayyarah refinery is one of the specialized refineries for the production of asphalt, and this asphalt is used in paving streets, as well as the S 125 is used in the Mastic and Flankot plants, and the by-product, which is heavy gas oil, is used as fuel for the stations.”
The Qayyarah oil refinery has great economic importance because it feeds its production of many governorates of Iraq with what they need of asphalt and gas oil, and the importance of this refinery has increased with the rehabilitation of railways and linking them again to the ports of Basra in southern Iraq.
Qusai Ali, head of the production and operation division of the refinery, said, “The crude oil comes to us from the Qayyarah fields managed by the North Oil Company, and when it reaches the refinery units, the refining process takes place at 60% asphalt, 20% heavy asphalt, 10% as light cassava, 7% naphtha, and 3% lost.” “.
The refinery’s cadres are seeking to reach the desired goal by rehabilitating all sections and reaching the maximum production capacity, which is estimated at more than 12 thousand barrels per day, which fills a large part of Iraq’s need and reduces the country’s dependence on oil imported from neighboring countries.
