Breaking consociationalism is more important than the prime minister’s position at Al-Sadr and anticipating white smoke that may come out of Kurdistan
Baghdad / Tamim Al-Hassan
The Sadrists are not expected to present until mid-June any new proposals regarding the political crisis, as well as the "frameworkers" waiting for their opponents to stumble or Iran to intervene.
The remaining hope is to wait for the “white smoke” to emerge from so far unannounced meetings that may bring together the two main Kurdish parties, which are expected to end the president’s knot.
The threads of the political problem became more complex with the passage of time, and it had begun with an objection to the election results, leading to a dispute with the judiciary.
In a statement, the second in less than a month, the latter warned against involving the name of the “judiciary” in political disputes.
A statement from the Judicial Council said, "The constitution affirms the independence of the judiciary, and that the Supreme Judicial Council is always keen on its independence and impartiality, and it is not a party to political disputes. Rather, its decisions are the result of the merits of each case and the evidence available in it."
The council called on “all political forces not to involve the judiciary in their disputes and not to prejudice the status of the judiciary in society,” noting that “if there are objections by a political party to a decision, legal contexts must be followed in addressing it.”
The statement came after calls by deputies to reconsider the “Federal Court” law due to the latter’s rejection of the food security law sent by the government, whose rejection was considered a disregard for the “highest authority in the country,” which is Parliament, according to Sadrist MP Maha Al-Douri.
The judiciary had published a similar warning statement to the political forces on April 24 last, against the background of circulating news about the settlement of cases against former Finance Minister Rafie al-Issawi and tribal figure Ali Hatem al-Sulaiman, who suddenly returned to Iraq.
The judiciary said at the time that it “looks at every case and the accused in it according to the legal evidence obtained and proven in the investigation papers or the case file, regardless of the accused’s personality and his political, occupational or social position.”
At the time, the council affirmed that “the work mechanisms of the judiciary are not subject to any political influence, whether for or against an accused.”
The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, in his televised speech last week, attacked the judiciary against the background of the Food Security Law, and said that he was surprised that "the judiciary is keeping pace with the disgraceful acts of the blocking third in terms of knowing first."
Al-Sadr considered the positions of the "Coordination Committee" as aimed at "starving" and "bringing the Iraqis to their knees," considering that disrupting laws that benefit the people is "rude."
Since then, demonstrations have taken place in several areas in Baghdad and cities in the center and south in support of the leader of the movement, who in mid-May announced his "temporary" transition to the opposition.
Nuri al-Maliki, the leader of the State of Law coalition, engaged in the debate over the judiciary, and called on all political blocs to be satisfied with the decisions of the Federal Court.
Al-Maliki said in a press statement issued by his office that “in order for the judiciary to be the verdict of justice and to have the final say in all cases and complaints brought before it, the judiciary must be respected and its impartiality recognized.”
Al-Maliki called for acknowledging the impartiality of the decisions of the Federal Court, "whether they were issued in favor of this party or that, or contrary to the desire of this party or that, and that the decisions of the Federal Court and the judiciary are not selectively dealt with."
And the conflicts of political forces turned towards the judiciary, after the failure of more than 10 initiatives to resolve the crisis, and there was also controversy over legal interpretations of the country's highest judicial institution, which was considered to be behind the delay in forming the government, such as the issue of the President's quorum.
According to Sadrist circles, the leader of the Sadrist movement is "not interested" in obtaining the government as much as he is interested in preventing "consensuality".
Sources close to the current told Al-Mada that the latter "tried to form a government and did not succeed, then he moved to the second part of his pledge, which is the transformation into an opposition, and he thus completely closed the door to any consensual government."
Al-Sadr gave his opponents, in his last deadline, a second chance to form the government, while the leader of the current may then go to “dissolving parliament” if the political blockage continues.
According to leaked information, the coordination framework has "almost exhausted all solutions and is waiting for others to move to solve the crisis."
The "frameworkers" believe, according to what people close to the "Coordination Committee" have said, that it will have no choice but to interfere with Iran to resolve the crisis, or wait for the tripartite alliance to disintegrate.
According to what those close to the framework told Al-Mada, "Iran's interference now in the Iraqi crisis is vacillating and is directly related to negotiations with the United States on the nuclear file."
Some components of the “Coordination Committee” also read the movement, which is being circulated in a limited way, about an imminent approach between the two major Kurdish parties that it will be in their interest.
Whereas those close to the "framers" indicate that the agreement of the Kurdistan Democratic Party with the Patriotic Union will be in the direction of the coordination framework and not the other way around.
But until this moment, the "Democratic" has not issued any indications about abandoning the "Triple Alliance", and most of its statements support its remaining within the "Save a Homeland" coalition.
The statements in support of some leaders of the “Coordination Committee” for the Iranian attack two months ago on Erbil under the pretext of bombing Israeli sites in Erbil, an accusation that was denied by a parliamentary committee that was formed in this regard, were considered to have ended any chance of rapprochement by the “Democratic Party” with the “Frameworkers.”
On the other hand, information about the rapprochement between the “Democratic” and the “Union” is very little, with the exception of what is leaked about imminent meetings of high-ranking delegations from both parties, and the possibility of putting forward an initiative to withdraw the two parties’ candidates for the post of President of the Republic to end the rivalry.
