The Director-General of the Radiation Protection Center in the Ministry of Environment, Sabah Al-Husseini, told the Iraqi News Agency, "The radiation file is divided into two parts, the radiation generated from natural sources, including radiation emitted from oil sources, and the other section is the radiation that Basra Governorate was exposed to as a result of previous wars. Al-Husseini added that "the uranium file was concluded in Basra Governorate, as well as the file of radioactive contamination, as the iron and steel plant in Basra was contaminated with cesium and was completely purified. Science and technology, as the Atomic Energy Authority, according to a signed contract, undertakes the removal of pollutants resulting from the oil industries .”
He pointed out that "the treatment methods differ, some of them need burial and others need air, and there are pollutions through treatment systems," noting that "the technical authorities put forward their plans, while the center studies them according to the instructions of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and then the plan is approved ."
He explained that "the causes of cancer are not all related to radiation, there are genetic causes, including exposure to chemical sources, and some due to exposure to radioactive sources," noting that "a statistic issued by the Cancer Council in the Ministry of Health shows the numbers of infected people, and on the basis of which a mechanism is developed to build centers and treatment for cases and the type of treatment. ".
Regarding the sites of pollution in the capital, Baghdad, Al-Husseini pointed out that “there are many areas, including the heavy machinery repair plant in Nahrawan affiliated to the Ministry of Oil, as well as the Dira’ Tigris area where there are traces of scrap. area until decontamination .
