The differences escalated between the two main parties in the Kurdistan region (the National Union and the Democratic Party), against the background of several issues, including the distribution of projects to the provinces of the region and positions in the federal government.
Despite the Democratic Party's talk about its request for dialogue, union officials continue to boycott work in the regional government or attend its meetings.
The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Ghiath Surji, said in an interview with Mawazine News, "The deputy head of the regional government, Qubad Talabani, and our ministers completely boycott work in the Kurdistan Regional Government, and they did not attend the cabinet meeting," noting that "there is a continuous escalation between the two sides." No meeting, dialogue or communication took place.
Soroji added, "Until now, we have not been approached about the Democratic Party's visit or set a date for it, and we hear all the rumors about the matter from party officials from here and there."
Soroji's statement does not coincide with what was spoken by the KDP spokesman, Mahmoud Muhammad, who said, "His party has officially informed the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan of its readiness to engage in a joint dialogue to discuss the existing problems and differences between the two sides."
He added, "The place to solve problems between political parties is to sit at the dialogue table and not through the media," stressing "the need to resolve these differences."
The Patriotic Union accuses the Kurdistan Regional Government, which is controlled by the Kurdistan Democratic Party, of neglecting the areas that are considered supportive of the union in terms of projects and reconstruction, accusations that the government rejects.
The intensity of the differences between the two parties began since 2018, when they entered for the first time with candidates for the presidency of the republic, so that the differences widened with the passage of days leading to talks about Sulaymaniyah’s intention to secede from the region.
