Health is making progress with the maternal mortality ratio declining

The Ministry of Health has made remarkable progress in reducing maternal mortality, following its adoption of the five-year national strategy for family planning and birth spacing for the period 2021-2025.
The Director of the Department of Reproductive Health at the Ministry, Dr. Raghad Abdel-Ridha, told Al-Sabah: The reason for the strategy is due to the high rates of maternal mortality over the past two decades, as deaths have been monitored since 2012, in addition to the surveys carried out by the Ministry of Health every five years, and other reports issued. Every three years, noting that the ministry decided that the reports would be annual, starting from the current year 2023.
Abdel-Ridha added that the ministry reaped the fruits of the strategy, after the expiration of half of its period, in reducing maternal mortality rates throughout Iraq except for the Kurdistan region, as the rate reached 28 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2022, after it was 49 deaths in 2021. As a result of improving obstetric care, noting that 36 percent of deaths in 2021 are due to mothers infected with the Coronavirus.
She added that the strategy, which international organizations contributed to preparing, includes improving health services for family planning and health care in all health institutions and primary and secondary care centers, indicating that its aim is to raise community awareness about the importance of family planning, which is the biggest challenge facing the implementation of the strategy.
She explained that the ministry coordinated with the relevant authorities, especially the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the offices of the Sunni and Shiite endowments. The Director of the Department of Reproductive Health stated that the Ministry is working with joint efforts to reach the desired goals during the coming years, as it has created pages on social networking sites (Facebook) to increase community awareness about family planning, in addition to holding a number of seminars and lectures.
