A member of the Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee, Thaer Makhaif, confirmed, on Wednesday, that successive governments neglected the water file with the upstream countries, which brought the country to its current situation, pointing to the existence of steps and meetings in order to restore the water share of Iraq.

Mukhaif told Al-Maalouma, "The upstream countries of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have built many dams in order to benefit from the water and achieve their interests, at a time when successive governments ignored this matter, which has brought Iraq to its current situation of drought and water scarcity."
He added, "The former ministers had ignored the great water shortage that occurred after they learned that the upstream countries had taken advantage of the situation and built their dams to conserve water and not give Iraq its share, although the riparian countries include water shares that must be preserved."
And he indicated that "many visits and meetings have been held between Iraqi and Turkish officials in order to guarantee Iraq's share of water, and this represents the first step, as it will be followed by a second step by heading towards the international community to guarantee Iraq's water rights." ended 25 n
