, experts in the field of environment, called on the government to activate the law to protect and improve the environment to reduce the phenomenon of killing biodiversity and poaching.
The environmental expert and consultant at the United Nations Development Program in Iraq, Omar Al-Sheikhly, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "Iraq is internationally committed to the issue of biological diversity through a set of international agreements," noting that "the first agreement is the spd agreement and it pertains to Iraq that Take a set of measures and be a strong member to support the agreement and preserve and preserve the wildlife that exists in the Iraqi geographical lands that live naturally.
He added, "There is also another CNS agreement that includes species that are introduced to Iraq during the migration period, and they are globally threatened and internationally protected species," noting that "all these international agreements oblige Iraq to provide a set of measures that contribute to protecting nature, except that these Living organisms are considered a vital food for climate change and therefore are included in the adaptation process undertaken by Iraq within the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
He stressed that "all environmental conservation operations aim to reach a society that is resilient towards climate change and emergency environmental changes, and seeks access to private natural reserves for living organisms, whose system is natural and untouchable by industrial and agricultural activities."
Al-Sheikhly pointed out, "After the (Montreal Convention in Canada) and after Iraq was obligated to declare 17 percent of its lands as natural reserves and not isolated from the rest of the countries in the region or the world, the most difficult step began because the (Montreal Convention on Biological Diversity) imposed that the percentage of reserves be 30 percent, and until this moment, Iraq owns from 1.5 to 7 percent of its lands in protected areas, so imagine how long Iraq needs to reach 30 percent by the end of 2030, so the process is very difficult.
He explained that "biological diversity is declining all over the world, especially in the Middle East region, where many species of creatures that were placed on the (Red List) endangered are receding," and he indicated that "Iraq has many species at risk of extinction, and the reason for the threat It is human interference or the so-called persecution of species, either due to overfishing, urban expansion, or chemical pollution, so many threats threaten the biological diversity in Iraq, which puts the country in a great challenge, and in addition to the current international obligations, Iraq must take a set of modern measures For the previous laws to protect biological diversity, especially from overfishing, because it is considered one of the most important threats that are measured by a special standard, and Iraq should try to reduce the impact of overfishing on biological diversity.
He pointed out, "There is a law for the Ministry of Agriculture to protect wild animals No. 17 of 2010 and it needs to be updated to accommodate the situation of endangered species, and this is the great challenge that the Iraqi Ministry of Environment is seeking with (UNAMI) institutions to find an urgent solution to it."
For his part, Raad al-Asadi, the head of the "Chibayish Organization for Biodiversity in Iraq," said in an interview with "Al-Sabah" that "the problem of overfishing is a very big problem, and we need an updated law and the activation of the law for protecting and improving the environment," expressing his regret that "in In the absence of law enforcement, hunters are killing endangered animals, so we call on the security forces to intervene to save the environment and animals.”
