    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Wednesday (August 30, 2023), the Iraqi Human Rights Commission reviewed the reasons for the presence of specific months that have the highest rates of extortion and domestic violence in Iraq, while noting that the popular alleys are the largest victim in registering cases.
The Director of the Commission for Human Rights in Diyala, Salah Mahdi, said in an interview with "Baghdad Today", that "through an extensive reading of the statistics available to us in Diyala and the rest of the provinces, we see that the months (June-July-August) are the highest in the rates of recording incidents of electronic extortion and domestic violence." Together, they account for about 25% of the total accidents at the level of the year.
He added, "These months are a holiday for all school levels, and people are more preoccupied with following communication and communication platforms, which means an increase in some people falling into "traps" of extortion, especially girls, accompanied by crises of multiple services that are a factor in creating psychological tensions that act as a spark in Domestic violence".
Mahdi pointed out, "The popular alleys are the largest victim in rates of extortion and domestic violence in the three months, which can be described as 'red' by leading the highest rates compared to the rest of the other regions."

    Two ways to blackmail
In a related matter, Hasan Lazem, an officer at the Community Police Directorate at the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, says, "The majority of extortion cases were recorded in Baghdad, and they are clearly on the rise.
And he states, "The extortion operations are carried out through two methods. The first is to build excessive trust by the victim with the blackmailer who begins the blackmail as soon as he obtains private photos or certain personal information, and because of the clan and social nature, the victim is forced to pay money in order to avoid the scandal, but extortion does not He stops the first time and the criminal keeps blackmailing constantly. As for the second method, it is electronic penetration due to the ignorance of many Iraqis of the necessary security requirements and the protection of their phones and electronic devices.
According to the officer, there have been cases of suicide committed by girls because of blackmailers in the past years, and there are others who were killed by their families, in addition to young men also being victims of extortion in various ways, calling not to fall at the mercy of blackmailers and to urgently bring the police into the case so that it can help them.

    Crime and Punishment
And the Iraqi Ministry of Interior had announced in September of last year a “significant escalation” in electronic extortion crimes, and according to the ministry’s spokesman, Major General Khaled Al-Muhanna, “the rise of the phenomenon began to threaten the fabric of Iraqi society, so the Ministry of Interior directed the Intelligence Agency and the Directorate of Combating Crimes and the community police adopt this issue.
She pointed out that "the crime of electronic extortion caused the death and suicide of many women, and that one of the blackmailers caused the divorce of 10 women, so similar crimes like this greatly affect the fabric of Iraqi society," stressing that "the Ministry of Interior is serious about following up the file, and that there are materials used by it." The Iraqi judiciary has failed to deal with these matters, and that many of the accused have been imprisoned for up to 14 years.
