    Economy News _ Baghdad
Minister of Health, Dr. Saleh Al-Hasnawi, said that importing medicines to treat rare diseases drains a lot of the ministry’s budget funds.
Al-Hasnawi said in an interview with Al-Sabah, followed by Al-Eqtisad News, that all imported medicines are distributed equally among the governorates depending on population ratios and estimation of need, as health institutions provide their data to estimate their annual need.
He pointed out that an amount of one trillion and 651 billion dinars was allocated during the current year to the ministry within this year’s federal budget, including an amount of 216 billion dinars for the Kurdistan region.
He added that the number of people infected with rare diseases does not exceed 500 patients, while the total budget spent on these numbers ranges between 10-15 percent of the budget of the General Company for Pharmaceuticals and Medical Supplies.
He stated that during the past few years, three contracts for medicines were discussed for 377 patients with rare hereditary diseases, and after negotiations and discussions with the companies, the prices were reduced to $105 million, equivalent to 10 percent of the pharmaceutical company’s budget.
Al-Hasnawi explained that there are contracts that drain a lot of the budget, especially rare medicines whose provision requires large allocations when imported from abroad.
