The World Food Program {WFP} warned against using groundwater in Iraq, describing its exploitation as a “disaster,” while an environmental expert estimated its quantity at about 6 billion cubic meters.
The director of the program in Iraq, Ali Reza Qureshi, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “the use of groundwater in Iraq represents a disaster on its way to happening, as this type of water comes from rain and is kept in basins inside the ground to maintain balance, and its consumption will create a state of depletion.” by the time".
Qureshi added, “I do not stand against the use of this water in agriculture or anything else, but this must be in accordance with a management that prevents wasting water and conserves it, in a way that preserves the balance within the earth,” noting that “An Iraqi cannot be selfish in using this water. “Because it represents the country’s future, in light of the diminishing water resources in the world.”
The Director of the Food Program in Iraq called for "the use of long-term solutions, such as recycling water used daily, because it represents a solution to the water problem that Iraq has been suffering from for years," explaining that "the current immediate solutions do not produce any treatment at all, and this must be supported by a series of Correct legislation and technology to assess the volume of water and use a mechanism to pump water back further into the groundwater.”
Qureshi suggests, “Establishing underground water basins in areas where groundwater collects, in addition to using water harvesting, as they can preserve groundwater and increase it in the future,” noting that “all of these solutions can prevent water wastage, especially if we know that the solution exists.” “It is in the hands of society itself, which can combine its efforts to address this scarcity.”
He pointed out that "the program works with the water research station in the Ministry of Water Resources, and part of this work is related to groundwater, by monitoring it using satellite images, and we seek to establish a water recycling project using solutions based on nature to be a comprehensive solution to the water problem in general." .
He pointed out that the program worked on preparing a special analysis of cultivated and non-cultivated lands using satellite images, to know the size of those lands, and the most important aspect of them is the neglected lands and farms that are not currently cultivated, due to the water conditions that Iraq suffers from and the failure to exploit them properly.
” In the field of environmental engineering, Haider Muhammad Abdel Hamid, groundwater is considered renewable water and is not resorted to except in critical cases.
Abdel Hamid said in an interview with “Al-Sabah” that “groundwater is a renewable reservoir, and there are many international studies that have determined exaggerated numbers about its quantities,” noting that “its numbers range between 5-6 billion cubic meters and are located in the regions of the Western Plateau, central and southern Iraq and some of the resources in the northern regions.
He added, "20% of the water resources in the northern regions depend on groundwater sources, while there is little use of it in the central and southern regions," calling for the rational use of this type of water, and resorting to it only in the event of continued water scarcity in accordance with the quantities. "A studied amount equivalent to the amount of river water and sediments pumped into the geological layers."
The expert in the field of environmental engineering warned of “excessive groundwater withdrawal, especially if it occurs during the summer, which leads to the drying out of the rock layers and the occurrence of cracks in them, and an increase in the concentrations of pollutants in the water content, and this process may cause a cut in the water supply.”
