    [rtl]Baghdad - Iraq Today:

Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab, said that Iraq needs to build 36 small dams that do not cost a lot of money, while he stressed that the water issue with Turkey is more political than technical, and Turkey links the water issue to the issue of oil exports and the Kurdistan Workers' Party. Dhiyab said in press statements, “The drought gave us a clear warning about the drought, and Iraq recorded the lowest water imports during the current summer, and the country was lucky with rainfall last winter, and it needs water harvesting dams to be built in the valleys.” [/rtl]
[rtl]He added, "We currently have 30 dams, and Iraq needs 36 additional small dams, and their construction does not require large sums. We also need sustainability and recharge of groundwater," noting that "the groundwater level in Kurdistan has decreased from 300 to 800 meters." [/rtl]
[rtl]The Minister of Water Resources indicated that “injection operations into the Mosul Dam are continuing and we need more advanced operations to protect the dam,” explaining that “the Shatt al-Arab Dam’s function is regulatory, not storage.” [/rtl]
[rtl]He continued, “The Karun River is currently open, and the Shatt al-Arab situation is good. We are working to continue opening the river. We have an understanding with Iran regarding the water situation, while the water issue with Turkey is more political than technical, and Turkey links the water file to the issue of oil exports and the Kurdistan Workers' Party." The Minister of Water Resources indicated that “Iraq is in the process of legislating the law of the Supreme Water Council, and the Supreme Water Committee has not held any meeting for 3 years.”[/rtl]
