{Local: Al-Furat News} The head of the Media and Communications Commission, Ali Al-Muayyad, explained today, Sunday, that there are more than 300 radio and television institutions and media offices in Iraq.
Al-Muayyad said during a speech he delivered at the conference held by the Geneva Center for Security Policy (GCSP) in Switzerland that the Iraqi government, represented by Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, has shown exceptional interest in freedom of the media and providing all necessary facilities for journalistic work in Iraq, out of its belief in the important roles of media institutions in the process of construction and development.
Al-Moayad reviewed the development in media freedoms after the fall of the dictatorial regime in 2003, stressing that the number of media institutions had risen to more than 300 radio and television institutions and media offices, compared to a very small number of institutions during the days of the previous regime, all of which were linked to the ruler at the time.
He pointed to the agreements and understandings with state institutions to strengthen media freedom in the country, and the great cooperation of the Supreme Judicial Council represented by its president, Faiq Zaidan, and its issuance of a number of directives within the framework of providing safe climates for journalists to work and carry out their work freely in accordance with the Iraqi constitution.
The head of the Media Commission provided an explanation of the important role played by the Iraqi media in promoting civil participation, integrity, state sovereignty and the law, as well as supporting human development through a number of coordination initiatives adopted by the Commission between the media on the one hand and official institutions on the other.
