    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (November 12, 2023), the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee revealed the details of the second phase of the agreement to control the Iraqi-Iranian border, while pointing to three red points according to which Baghdad is dealing with the file.
Committee member Waad al-Qaddu told Baghdad Today, “There is a joint security agreement between Baghdad and Tehran to secure the border strip between the two countries, especially from the Kurdistan region, and to prevent any factors that contribute to raising tension and security instability.”
Al-Qaddo confirmed that "the deployment of the border guards began weeks ago, and all points were captured, and all the headquarters of the Iranian opposition parties, including the armed ones, were eliminated and pushed to compounds under federal security control."
He added, "Baghdad will not accept that the border strip be the starting point for any operations that affect the security of neighboring countries, nor will it allow there to be any interference by neighboring countries in security matters, because we believe in building good relations with everyone without exception, based on respect and understanding." .
A member of the Parliamentary Security Committee pointed out that “after closing the opposition parties’ headquarters, the phase of disarmament will follow gradually because it cannot be allowed to remain any parties carrying weapons on Iraqi territory,” pointing out that “Iraq’s efforts to secure its borders with Iran and the rest of the neighboring countries are continuing in accordance with Comprehensive strategy.
Al-Qaddo explained, “Baghdad deals with the border issue through three red points: rejecting the presence of armed groups on the border strip with any of the neighboring countries, and preventing the presence of party headquarters that constitute a source of threat to the security of neighboring countries, in addition to that the border guards are concerned with the presence and deployment with Neighboring countries do not allow any activity that threatens stability.”
On (March 19, 2023), Iraq and Iran signed a border security agreement, in a move that Iraqi officials said was primarily aimed at enhancing the security of the border region with the Iraqi Kurdistan region, which Tehran says armed Kurdish opponents pose a threat to its security.
A statement from the office of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani said, "The joint security agreement includes coordination in protecting the common borders between the two countries and consolidating joint cooperation in several security fields."
Al-Sudani reiterated his categorical rejection of Iraqi territory being a site for the presence of armed groups or a starting point for targeting or any infringement on Iraqi sovereignty, stressing “Iraq’s firm position that rejects Iraqi territory being a starting point for attacks on any of the neighboring countries,” according to the statement.
