The Ministry of Water Resources expected that the country's water reserves next summer would be better than those of last year, after recording a noticeable rise in the levels of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers as a result of the rains that recently fell on the country. Minister Aoun Dhiyab Abdullah said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: It is possible to store the quantities of rain falling north of the Mosul Dam within its lake, while that which falls after it is stored within Lake Tharthar, provided that the quantity is not limited due to the expansion of the lake, adding that in If the quantities of water are limited, its direction is changed towards the Samarra Dam Lake, in addition to the Tigris River Basin, which is what actually happened recently.
He continued that the aforementioned measure, which took place a few days ago, resulted in a rise in the river’s water levels by one and a half metres, and contributed to improving the quality of its water, in addition to strengthening the Euphrates River in quantities amounting to 150 m3/s from the front of the Samarra Dam, in addition to securing a large portion of the land need. As a result of the recent rains, as well as creating great opportunities for subsequent irrigations, in the event of rain covering the total area of the planted crops, noting that if the rains stop, irrigations will be completed from Shatt Al-Gharraf and the backside of Al-Kut Dam.
Abdullah revealed that diverting most of the rainwater towards the marshes, especially Al-Huwaizeh, led to a rise in their levels by two metres, and there are still large quantities of water after the Mosul Dam, which prompted the Ministry to reduce water releases from 450 to 150 m3/s, due to storage. Four consecutive drought seasons that struck the country caused its water reserves to decline from 55 billion cubic meters in 2019 to less than seven billion cubic meters during the summer of this year.
The Minister of Resources explained that the upcoming rain will be positive, as it will lead to an increase in water storage within the country’s dams, as a result of the good rate of rain currently falling and snow on the highlands of the northern region, stressing that next summer will be better than its counterpart for the current year, in terms of water storage.
