Shafaq News / The National Investment Authority revealed today, Thursday, that 6 new cities will soon be transferred for housing in various governorates of Iraq after completing a set of procedures related to them. Typically, these cities come as solutions to the housing crisis and employment of the Iraqi labor force.
The spokesman for the National Investment Authority, Muthanna Al-Ghanmi, said in an interview with Shafaq News Agency, “The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani in the new jeweler city located in the capital, Baghdad, specifically in the (Abu Ghraib) district in Al-Nasr and Al-Salam district, with an area of more than 7 thousand dunams.
He explained, "The work will take three years to complete it completely, and the Jeweler City project will provide thousands of job opportunities, and will attract a lot of expertise and manpower in the engineering field, business administration, and other fields."
He added, "Al-Jawahiri City was transferred according to a new and modern investment method that guarantees the economic relationship between the state and the investor, so that the investing company will grant 25% of the number of plots serviced by the state, and thus the state will distribute these serviced plots to specific categories approved by the National Housing Council, either at subsidized prices or This is free and according to the authority of the Prime Minister.”
Al-Ghanimi continued, “This city in total will provide more than 10,000 service plots for the state that will be granted by the investing company and be at the disposal of the government, and 30,000 residential units, and the overall operations and uses within the basic design of Al-Jawahiri City will include - in addition to the residential units - green areas, entertainment places, and roads.” Major and secondary, as well as an international road, health services, sports, infrastructure, commercial, and educational services.”
The spokesman for the Investment Authority confirmed, “All of this in fact comes within the efforts made by Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, and also implemented and followed up by the National Investment Authority, and under the guidance of the Chairman of the Authority, Haider Makkiya, in coordination with the Ministry of Construction, Housing, Municipalities, and Public Works.”
Al-Ghanimi also pointed out that “Al-Jawahiri City is one of the cities that were referred or announced as investment opportunities since last June, as five investment opportunities were announced, one of which was Al-Jawhari City in Baghdad, Al-Janayn in Babylon, the banks of the new Karbala in Karbala, and Al-Ghazlani in Nineveh, And the new Fallujah in Anbar.”
He noted that, “In the near future, among the proposals recommended by the team in charge of new cities is the announcement of a group of new cities as investment opportunities, including: Al-Mutanabbi City in Wasit, Al-Nakhil City in Basra, Al-Salam City in Najaf, Al-Warka City in Al-Muthanna, and Al-Furatin in Diwaniyah.” And the city of Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar, and these proposed cities will be announced soon after completing all technical, administrative and legal procedures to declare them as investment opportunities.”
Al-Ghanimi concluded his speech by saying, "All these measures come in order to reduce the identified housing crisis, and the Prime Minister is working to contain it with a ministerial team headed by the Minister of Construction and Housing and with the membership of Haider Makkia and the rest of the other sectoral bodies."
Yesterday morning, Wednesday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani announced the launch of work on the new Al-Jawahiri residential city project, in Abu Ghraib district, west of the capital, Baghdad, one of the five new city projects that were announced as part of the government’s strategy to address the housing crisis. Reducing overcrowding in major city centres.
Al-Sudani said in his speech on the sidelines of the ceremony, that the government identified, from the beginning of its duties, the flaw in the housing crisis, and prepared thoughtful plans to address it, which included constructing integrated residential cities, not complexes, and choosing locations for them on the outskirts of Baghdad and the governorates, away from overcrowded areas.
He stated that the government announced 5 residential cities as a first phase, to be built in the capital, Baghdad, Babylon, Karbala, Nineveh, and Anbar, and later 10 new residential cities will be announced in other governorates, stressing that the goal is to reach 250-300 thousand housing units, through which the poor classes will be targeted. And there will be a commitment to housing unit prices to remain constant.
Al-Sudani also indicated that the New Al-Jawahiri City project will include, for the first time, 25% of the serviced lands, which the government will distribute among citizens according to mechanisms that will be approved.
The total area of the New Al-Jawahiri City project is 7,121 dunams, and it includes 30,000 various housing units, 10,000 serviced residential plots of land, universities and commercial centers, and about 70 schools. It will have all other service facilities and urban activity centers, within the framework of designing a smart city that takes into account standards. Environment, modernity and service provision using electronic systems.
It is noteworthy that Iraq is suffering from a stifling housing crisis due to the increase in its population compared to the number of residential complexes, in addition to the inability of citizens with limited income to build their own housing unit due to the high cost of land and construction materials.
The Ministry of Construction and Housing estimates that Iraq needs more than three million housing units to fill the housing crisis in the country.
