    The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, confirmed today, Thursday (March 7, 2024), that Iraq is working closely to resolve the cases of detainees, while indicating that thousands of them who have completed their sentences have been released.
    The Presidency's media office said in a statement received by "Baghdad Today", "The President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received today at Baghdad Palace, the Iraq researcher in the Middle East and North Africa Department of Human Rights Watch, Sarah Sanbar, in the presence of Minister of Justice Khaled Shawani." Pointing out that "during the meeting, the general situation of prisons and detainees was discussed."
    President Rashid stressed, according to the statement, that “Iraq is committed to the standards of implementing human rights, especially in prisons, improving the conditions of detainees and inmates and providing legal and administrative procedures to resolve their cases,” noting that “the Presidency of the Republic is working closely with the Ministry of Justice and the relevant security authorities in order to resolve cases.” "Thousands of detainees were released after completing their sentences."
    For her part, Sarah Sanbar reviewed “the progress of Human Rights Watch’s work in Iraq, the reports it prepares in the file of rights and freedoms, and the issues it works on, praising the work of the Iraqi authorities in ensuring human rights principles.
