The marshes are considered one of the most important bodies of water in Iraq, and after they were included in the World Heritage List, they became a beautiful tourist destination. However, the conditions that accompanied those spaces prevented their continuation and sustainability, as Iraq was affected by global warming and the continuing years of drought that cast their actual shadows over them. During the past years.
The recent waves of rain throughout the country and the rise in water levels have made the marshes regain their health, to the point that some consider them natural projects for controlling and storing water.
Member of the Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshlands Committee, Thaer Al-Jubouri, in an interview with “Al-Sabah” said: “There is a necessity for a modern strategy to harvest the rain that the central and southern regions are witnessing, even though the marshes were able to absorb the amounts of rain and have become more like water storage projects, especially After the sudden state of irrigation, it receives its unusual share of water, but this water recovery is not sufficient, especially since the Iraqi summer has high temperatures that cause
drought.”
For his part, the water expert, Tahseen Al-Musawi, confirmed to Al-Sabah that “Iraq needs water harvesting dams in the provinces of Diyala, Wasit, and Maysan, noting that the Ministry of Water Resources previously presented a strategic study to advance these projects, but unfortunately they were not implemented.”
He explained, "These dams are not dictated, and they are specific to times of rain and floods. Their primary purpose is to serve as regulators and dividers to store water and support river basins in the summer."
Al-Moussawi continued, “The areas of the marshes reach 20,000 square kilometers, and they are not a water storage station, but rather for environmental diversity and the breeding of fish, migratory birds, and buffalo. They contribute to reducing global warming, as they are considered the lungs of Iraq. They need real sustainability and the preservation of their rights, and it cannot be exaggerated.” The quantities of rainwater did not meet the need and did not enhance even a small part of the storage.”
