The United States said that it did not participate in an Israeli air strike on the Iranian embassy complex in Damascus, which led to the killing of two Iranian military commanders and five military advisors.
Iran is studying scenarios for responding to Israel after its consulate was targeted.
White House National Security Spokesman John Kirby described Iranian accusations against Washington of responsibility for the bombing that occurred Monday as “nonsense,” and warned that his country would respond to any retaliatory attacks.
“Let me make it clear,” he said in a press briefing. We had nothing to do with the attack in Damascus... We did not participate in any way.”
Kirby said, “We are always uncompromising in protecting our forces... and our facilities in Iraq and Syria... We will do our utmost to protect those forces.”
For his part, Robert Wood, Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations, said: “We will not hesitate to defend our military personnel and repeat our previous warnings to Iran and its agents not to exploit the situation - once again, an attack in which we had no role or advanced knowledge - to resume their attacks on American military personnel.” .
Wood said that Washington does not yet have confirmation of the status of the building that was bombed in Damascus.
He added, “Any confirmed attack on buildings that are actually a diplomatic facility would be a source of concern to the United States.” Diplomatic missions and their buildings, as well as official diplomatic residences, must be protected, especially in times of armed conflict.”
Damascus strike: Israel presents a different account of the targeted building.
Iran informed the 15-member Security Council that it reserves the right to “take a decisive response” to the attack, accusing Israel of violating the founding charter of the United Nations, international law, and the sanctity of diplomatic and consular buildings.
Iranian Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Zahra Ershadi, said, “The United States is responsible for all crimes committed by the Israeli regime,” accusing Washington of trying to destabilize Syria and the region and criticizing its support for Israel in its war against the Palestinian Hamas movement.
Ershadi called on the Security Council to denounce the attack on the Iranian diplomatic headquarters in Damascus.
Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said that Israel did not provide any prior warning regarding the strike on the Iranian mission headquarters in the Syrian capital.
Singh added in a press conference, “The Israelis did not notify us of their raid or its intended target in Damascus,” and indicated that Iran was secretly informed that the United States was not behind the strike.
Two officials, who declined to reveal their identities, said that Israel told the United States shortly before the attack that it would carry out an operation in Syria, but it used vague language that did not specify a target.
One of the officials said that Israel “did not provide any details about the targets (of the attack) or where it was carried out, and the strike was already being carried out before any word was passed through the US government.”
Iran said on Tuesday that it would respond to the Israeli attack that destroyed the consular section of its embassy in the Syrian capital and led to the killing of seven members of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which carries out paramilitary and espionage operations outside Iran.
Israel did not claim responsibility for the attack.
