On Sunday, the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, reassured about water storage for next summer, and while he confirmed work according to two parallel plans to invest rainwater and rationalize consumption, he announced the intention to determine the limits of flooding in the Tigris and eliminate violations.
Diab said, in a statement reported by the official news agency, and seen by Al-Iqtisad News, that “the Ministry was able to provide good water storage as a result of the rainy season, and we expect that the melting of snow will contribute to the flow of good quantities of water in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and thus the storage has become encouraging and reassuring.” To meet the needs of next summer.
He added, "On the other hand, there is a serious move by the government towards rationalization and optimal use of water. For this reason, the move was toward modern irrigation to reduce water waste, and in fact we notice a wide spread of this method among farmers."
He added, "There is a directive from the Prime Minister to import large quantities of sprinkler irrigation equipment from the Ministry of Agriculture, and the number will reach more than 12,000 sprinklers during this year, and the process is continuing."
Diab continued, "The campaign to remove water violations is important, vital, and essential because it saved quantities of water, as about 7,900 lakes were removed, as the water was randomly pumped into open basins, causing high evaporation. That is why we resolved the issue with great support from the Prime Minister and the security forces." Without this support, it would not have been removed.”
He pointed out that "the process of monitoring violations is continuing, and there is a trend to determine the limits of flooding for what has been built near the Tigris River, provided that violations and prohibitions are removed for what exceeds it, and the trend to remove violations is not limited to Baghdad, but includes all governorates."
