Water resources are reassured: rainfall and storage indicators will be positively reflected in the summer season

After heavy rains fell over the past few days, the Ministry of Water Resources reassured that the stockpile of that water will reflect positively on the upcoming summer season.
Experts warned that Iraq will enter the drought stage, if the current water policies go ahead, calling at the same time to reconsider the agricultural and water policy.
Aoun Diab, a consultant to the Ministry of Water Resources, said that "the rainwater that reached the water tanks is modest," noting that "it constituted some change, but it is a very partial change, and as a result of the low temperatures the melting of snow was delayed."
Diab added that "the current winter season is abundant with snow in the northern region of Iraq, and it has a positive effect on the period of snow melting next spring," noting that "Iraq has two important main dams, namely the Mosul Dam and Haditha Dam, one of which is located on the Tigris River and the other on the Euphrates River. As the variables that occurred in the two dams are very limited, and they are not effective, as for the rest of the dams, such as the Dukan Dam, the water level in it has risen significantly, but there is also a large storage void that exceeds 12 meters until it reaches the maximum level.
The ministry’s advisor pointed out, “The Dukan Dam affects limited areas, such as the Kirkuk irrigation projects, in addition to giving quantities of water to the Lower Zab, meaning that its water imports are not large so that we can benefit from it,” adding that “the increase in the Darbandikhan Dam was clear.”
And he indicated that "it is still too early to give an accurate number about water levels in the dams," noting that "the indicators are good, and we have confidence in securing drinking water, human uses, and irrigation of orchards and vegetables at a good rate."
The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, had indicated in a statement received by Al-Mada that "the percentage of rainfall and water storage verified for this season will reflect positively on the next summer season."
Al-Hamdani added that "the discussions with the upstream countries in securing Iraq's water share are proceeding satisfactorily and within the ambition, especially after the recent visit to Syria in order to unify positions and future visions to secure fair and equitable water shares with the upstream countries."
In turn, the water and agricultural expert, Adel Al-Mukhtar, says that "the rain that fell during the past days is not in large quantities that call for complete reassurance, with regard to the scarcity that the country has witnessed."
Al-Mukhtar added, "The Ministry of Water Resources has not yet announced the quantities of water received from those rains, nor has it disclosed the size of its water storage."
The water expert pointed out, "The amount of rain water that has fallen can meet the needs of next summer," adding, "at the same time, it requires a review of the agricultural policy and drawing up a correct plan to reduce water wastage."
Al-Mukhtar warned against "Iraq entering a dangerous phase accompanied by drought and global warming," calling on "the new House of Representatives to exercise strict control over the water and agriculture files."
The World Bank has warned Iraq that the water will not reach a third of the irrigated lands in 2050, if the temperature rises by one degree Celsius.
