    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Although the Mosul Dam still contains storage voids, and has not reached fullness, the announcement of the Ministry of Water Resources to allow a flood wave to pass into the rivers and Lake Tharthar instead of storing it in the Mosul Dam, raised questions about the reason for allowing this water to pass instead of preserving it in the dam.
Mosul Dam, from which water releases towards the Tigris River in normal conditions are approximately 300 cubic meters per second, releases from it have been raised over the past two days to 1,200 cubic meters per second, i.e. 4 times its normal releases, which indicates large quantities of water trying to block Mosul. “Dispose” of them, rather than storing them.
The Mosul Dam's storage capacity is more than 11 billion cubic metres, and it is not known how much the water level has reached in it now, but last March the storage had reached 5 billion cubic meters according to the dam administration, but the levels also rose last April. Estimates indicate that the water level in the dam ranges between 7 to 9 billion cubic metres.
It can be said that 9 billion cubic meters is the highest level the dam may reach, even though its storage capacity is more than 11 billion cubic metres. However, these 3 billion cubic meters are the safety zone due to the risks threatening the Mosul Dam, which Western reports described as “the most dangerous dams.” "the world" due to the cracks in its structure.
For many years, the cadres of the Ministry of Water Resources have been pouring and grouting the dam’s foundations to prevent the melting of the limestone rocks on which the dam stands. After the last flood wave was passed by the Ministry of Water Resources, questions were raised as to whether the dam is at risk of collapsing.
Today, Tuesday (May 14, 2024), the expert in water affairs, Abdul Salam Al-Obaidi, confirmed that there are no risks to the Mosul Dam from collapse and flooding,
Al-Obaidi said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “excess water storage can be released towards the Zab, Dohuk, Dokan, villages and nearby areas .”
He added, "There are no risks from the dam overflowing, as long as there is the possibility of releasing the water storage and other dams in an amount that cannot absorb more water. In general, the water season bodes well for overcoming the drought crisis, and there is a good abundance in all dams that must be managed wisely by the Ministry of Resources." ".
