    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Water Resources revealed its plan to contain and benefit from rainwater and torrential rains expected to fall during the current winter season.
Ministry spokesman Khaled Shamal said, “The Ministry has prepared its plan to deal with rainwater and the revenues generated from it by forming crisis cells related to the management of floods and rainwater,” noting that “Iraq has a large storage vacuum. Since 2019, Iraq has been suffering from drought and we have not witnessed “It has been a wet year since.”
He pointed out that “expectations of heavy rains this year prompted the ministry to prepare early through maintenance and rehabilitation procedures for distribution and control facilities and infrastructure in Iraqi dams and storage facilities,” indicating that “Iraq has a storage vacuum estimated at 100 billion cubic meters in its dams or lakes.” Natural areas such as Tharthar, Habbaniya, and even Razaza, in addition to the marshes.”
He explained that “the effect of rain depends on three important factors, which are the location of its rainfall, its intensity, and the length of its fall,” noting that “the rain falling north of the Samarra Dam is useful and influential, as it can be dealt with and stored, starting from the Mosul Dam and the rest of the dams, all the way to Lake Tharthar and Habbaniyah.”
Regarding the rain falling south of the Samarra Dam, its benefit is limited to irrigating agricultural lands and is directed downstream of the river, and the rain falling on the marshes can nourish their areas.
Shamal confirmed that “the Ministry intends to implement 26 dams to harvest water distributed among the governorates of the Kurdistan Region, Nineveh, Anbar, Karbala, Najaf, Muthanna, Diyala, and Wasit during the coming years,” noting that “the Ministry began implementing three dams after allocating funds in the current year’s budget.”
