{Local: Al-Furat News} The Ministry of Water Resources announced that the country does not need to build dams with the continuing drought and scarcity of water revenues.
"Iraq's problem is not treasury, but revenues, and we have a treasury vacuum estimated at 80 billion cubic meters," said the ministry's spokesman, Khaled Shamal, in a press statement.
He added, "Our problem is with revenues related to state policies, rainfall rates, global warming, and our ability to deal with water on the agricultural side. As for dams, we do not need to build them."
Shamal believes that "Iraq may need dams to harvest water in the western and eastern regions, such as the areas west of Mosul down to Anbar and Karbala, as well as in Diyala and Wasit."
And he added, "We have a reservoir void that can fill 10 dams, so work on the Makhul Dam has been halted, especially since the $3 billion allocated for its construction can be used in major reclamation projects."
He pointed out, "Iraq had flood seasons in previous decades about once every 20 years, but this was not taken advantage of," noting that "the ministry currently owns a water system management to distribute water between the Khazni lakes."
Iraq has 19 dams, most of which are built on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their tributaries throughout the country, and it relies on water mainly on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their tributaries, which all originate from Turkey and Iran, and the two rivers meet near the city of Basra (southern Iraq) to form the Shatt al-Arab.
The water file has become a major challenge in Iraq, a semi-desert country with a population of more than 42 million people, and Baghdad has repeatedly held its neighbors Turkey and Iran responsible for reducing water levels due to building dams on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
