    Information / Report..
Although the positions of the blocs have become clear regarding today’s session regarding the election of a Speaker of the House of Representatives to succeed the dismissed President Muhammad Al-Halbousi, it seems that the session will not be easy, especially with the intensification of the competition between the Al-Azm and Sovereignty candidate, Salem Al-Issawi, and the Taqadum candidate, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani.

In October of last year, the Federal Court decided to terminate the membership of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Muhammad Rekan Al-Halbousi, and the membership of Representative Laith Mustafa Hamoud Al-Dulaimi, effective from the date of issuance of the ruling on 11/14/2023, a final decision binding on all authorities.
Political observer Haitham Al-Khazali suggested that the session to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives scheduled to be held today, Saturday, will witness intense competition between Representatives Salem Al-Issawi and Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani due to the closeness of the votes, denying the occurrence of chaos or breach of the quorum for the session due to the desire of all political forces to end the crisis in the position of Speaker of Parliament.
Al-Khazali told Al-Maalouma, “According to the facts on the ground, the session to elect the Speaker of Parliament will involve intense competition between the candidate of the lead, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, and the candidate of Azm and Sovereignty, Salem Al-Issawi, due to the closeness of the votes.”

He added, "Although many people expect intense competition, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani's chances are the closest to reaching the position through the support of the majority of the forces of the coordinating framework for him, such as the State of Law, Badr, Al-Hikma and others, given that the coordinating framework is the one who has the final say as it is the largest bloc in Parliament." Al-Khazali denied this. After the Sadara bloc, which included Al-Mashhadani, allied with the Taqadum bloc ,
the electoral process for the Speaker of Parliament changed significantly, especially since this bilateral alliance now had a Sunni parliamentary majority, in addition to the prominent and influential Sunni political leaders in the scene, according to the leader in Al-Fatah, Mahmoud. Al-Hayani.
The lead bloc includes four representatives: Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, Talal Al-Zubaie, Khaled Al-Obaidi, and Muhammad Nouri Al-Abd Rabbo, in addition to a number of political leaders.
The data indicate that most of the blocs of the coordination framework are voting for Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani as Speaker of Parliament. The Sunni bloc, which has a majority of the component’s seats, in keeping with political custom, and this majority was achieved after the Prominence Bloc allied with the Progress Bloc.”

In addition, a member of the Al-Fatah parliamentary bloc, Rafiq Al-Salhi, confirmed that the Prime Minister’s election session is still unclear, but it must be decided due to a strong desire to close this file.
Al-Salhi told Al-Maalouma, “The session to elect a new speaker of the House of Representatives next Saturday was not easy, indicating that the chances of Representative Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani are better because the majority of the parliamentarians will move towards choosing Al-Mashhadani.”
He added, "Closing the file for electing the Speaker of Parliament has become the desire of all political forces, in order for the Council to continue its work in legislating important laws, and that obstructing it will negatively affect everyone, including the government," suggesting that "the choice of the Speaker of Parliament will be decided during Saturday's session."
It is noteworthy that the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives is shared by the Sunni component, according to the prevailing political custom in Iraq since the formation of the political system after the year 2003, while the position of Prime Minister goes to the Shiites, and the President of the Republic goes to the Kurds.
Attention is turning to the parliamentary session scheduled for today, Saturday, to elect a new speaker of the House of Representatives, after failing to settle this election four times, and failing to find an alternative to Al-Halbousi due to the lack of consensus on a single candidate, in light of the Sunni fragmentation and the insistence of the coordination framework on nominating new figures or maintaining Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, acting Speaker.
