An Iraqi initiative to ban the political exploitation of religions

5 years ago; Iraqi writer Salam Sarhan published an article in English in the British newspaper The Independent, in which he proposed legislating an international treaty to ban all forms of exploitation of religions to violate equality and discrimination in rights and duties, as well as to ban religious exclusion and all restrictions on freedom of belief and worship.
Within a few years, global support for the global Iraqi initiative launched by Sirhan, which seeks to legislate an international treaty to ban the political use of religions, has expanded. It has become firmly established on the international agenda with the near issuance of a decision to support it by the Council of Europe.
The draft resolution, published on the Council of Europe website, calls on all member states to support and adopt the proposed treaty on the international scene. The decision is expected to be issued in the coming months to constitute a major qualitative leap in its ambitious path towards the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly. The number of members of the Council of Europe is 46 countries, in addition to 9 countries as observers and partners, including Morocco, Jordan, Canada and Mexico.
Sarhan says: The country that adopts the initiative first will lead the procedures for including the proposed treaty on the agenda of the United Nations General Assembly and direct the course of the official dialogue with dozens of governments and international organizations, calling on the Iraqi government to adopt the official launch of the draft treaty, stressing that this will strengthen its position. That country and gives it a historical role, when it leads the world to address its most serious problems in the modern era.
The founder of the initiative and its Secretary-General, Salam Sarhan, says: The initiative has an advanced dialogue with more than twenty governments, including seven Arab governments, but diplomatic norms require not disclosing some of them, indicating that he sent official letters to dozens of Arab and international heads of state and governments, including Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, proposing that Iraq adopt the initiative on the international scene.
Sarhan stressed that the proposed treaty is based on the utmost respect for all religions and focuses only on putting an end to all their abuses for political purposes, and that it is deeply consistent with the policies of all responsible and moderate countries and with the positions of all committed religious authorities in the world. He stressed the importance that the proposed legislation comes in the form of an international treaty to become part of international law, and that it will not be in the form of declarations and charters, which lack a binding legal character, of which the world has dozens without any significant effect.
The main supporter of the initiative and member of the Board of Trustees, Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, believes that the problem of arbitrary confusion between religious complexes and the responsibilities of governments in imposing the rule of law cannot be solved on any local scale, neither in France or Nigeria nor in Britain, India, or any other country. The Middle East. It is a global problem that requires international law for all countries of the world. He ruled out that any country would reject the proposed treaty.
