    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]Today, Thursday, the Administrative Undersecretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Mahdi Sahar, identified the reasons for not approving the Saudi investment project in the Muthanna desert.[/rtl]
[rtl]Sahar said, “The Ministry of Water Resources did not approve the Saudi investment of 2 million dunums to protect groundwater from depletion.”[/rtl]
[rtl]He added, "Currently, these lands have been invested by Iraqi investment companies using modern irrigation methods, including pivot and fixed sprinklers and drip irrigation, to irrigate the various agricultural crops that have been planted."[/rtl]
[rtl]He added, “The Saudi Almarai Company had a desire to invest in the desert, but withdrew at the time due to problems related to the lack of feasibility and depletion of the groundwater in that region,” noting that Saudi Arabia was heading towards cultivating the plants of alfalfa and clover, which consume large quantities of water.”[/rtl]
[rtl]Saudi Arabia had previously submitted a request to Iraq to establish projects in the Samawah desert, while indicating its readiness to establish many projects in all Iraqi governorates.[/rtl]
