Baghdad/Al-Masala: Talks continue between Baghdad and Washington regarding the mission of the international coalition in Iraq, as attention turns to the possibility of extending this mission after a decade has passed since the establishment of the coalition to fight the “ISIS” organization.
The statement issued by the media office of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani refers to discussions about ending the coalition's presence in Iraq during his meeting with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in New York.
Al-Sudani, whose government program focuses on ending the mission of the international coalition, believes that the justifications for the continued presence of American forces no longer exist. He stated that “there is no need for the presence of forces from 86 countries” in Iraq, in light of the pressure he faces from the “Coordination Framework” made up of political forces and factions, which in turn seek to end the mission of the coalition based on the lack of need for its presence.
Despite political pressure to end the coalition mission, the ISIS threat remains, with daily reports of clashes with the group in northern and western Iraq. Thomas Erick, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, said the U.S.-Iraq relationship is moving toward a new model, including a reduction in U.S. forces while maintaining some presence in northern Iraq to reduce friction points.
The US Ambassador to Iraq, Alina Romanowski, hinted at the continued threats to Iraq's security and sovereignty, reflecting the complexity facing relations between the two countries.
According to American newspapers, a plan between Baghdad and Washington includes the withdrawal of hundreds of coalition forces by September 2025, with a plan to withdraw the rest of the forces by the end of the following year. While negotiations indicate significant progress, there are still concerns that the withdrawal of American forces could lead to a worsening of the security situation.
Mark Kimmitt, former US Assistant Secretary of State, confirmed that the withdrawal of US forces will not lead to a security vacuum, as Iraqi forces will remain able to control the remaining ISIS elements, with continued US support in the areas of intelligence and coordination.
