Iraq does not seem to be far from the ongoing conflict in the region, but will be the first to be affected after Lebanon as a result of the Israeli escalation, which has intensified its aggression in southern Lebanon since last week.
There is no Iraqi government position yet regarding whether or not to enter the war front, but all Iraqi positions, led by the position of the religious authority in Najaf, have been supportive of the Lebanese people with all means of food, medicine, and humanitarian assistance, as well as providing housing.
The escalation of tension in Lebanon began after a tragic week that included three attacks, which Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah described at the time as “strong strikes,” targeting Hezbollah’s calling and communication devices on September 17 and 18, which led to their explosion and the killing and wounding of dozens, followed by a concentrated attack in the southern suburbs of Beirut, which led to the killing of a large number of Hezbollah leaders, including Ibrahim Aqil and Ahmed Wehbe.
Following the targeting of pagers that targeted members of the Lebanese Hezbollah last week, and the start of the exchange of shelling with Israel, many leaders of the Iraqi factions showed unlimited support for the Lebanese Hezbollah, by responding with drones to Israel, while some of them published calls on social media to volunteer to fight alongside Lebanon.
In a dangerous development, the Lebanese Hezbollah announced today, Saturday, the martyrdom of its Secretary-General, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, following the Zionist raid last Friday evening on the southern suburbs of Beirut.
The party stated, and the statement added that the Secretary-General of the party “joined his great immortal martyr comrades whose path he led for nearly thirty years, during which he led them from victory to victory, succeeding the Master of the Martyrs of the Islamic Resistance in 1992 until the liberation of Lebanon in 2000 and to the glorious divine victory in 2006 and all the battles of honor and sacrifice, arriving at the battle of support and heroism in support of Palestine, Gaza and the oppressed Palestinian people.”
On September 20, the Secretary-General of the Sayyed al-Shuhada Brigades, Abu Alaa al-Walaei, announced, after the bombings in Lebanon, his readiness to send 100,000 fighters to fight alongside Hezbollah in Lebanon. This is an indication of the factions’ readiness to enter deeply into the confrontation against the Zionist entity.
On the parliamentary level, the Iraqi Council of Representatives decided to hold a special session to discuss the Israeli “aggression” on Lebanon today, Saturday, September 28, 2024, while the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee considered that “Iraq is ready for the confrontation.”
Committee member Ali al-Bandawi says, “Iraq considers Lebanon and Palestine to be part of the Palestinian cause that we have always defended.”
“Iraq is neither far from nor new to wars. It fought the Americans, then al-Qaeda, and then ISIS, and the enemy is one,” al-Bandawi says, adding that “Iraq is ready to confront the Zionist aggression as it faced the enemy before.”
Regarding the position of the religious authority in Najaf, the member of the parliamentary security committee indicates that “the supreme authority, represented by the authority Ali al-Sistani, intervenes at the appropriate time when it feels that the structure of Islam has been threatened.”
Al-Bandawi points out that “the statement of the authority is binding on every Iraqi, to help the brotherly Lebanese people, and expose the crimes of the Zionist enemy.”
The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee intends to hold a meeting to discuss the Zionist aggression on Gaza and Lebanon, and to examine its repercussions, while a number of representatives have begun collecting donations to support the Lebanese people, according to Al-Bandawi.
On September 24, the supreme religious authority, Ali al-Sistani, directed “to make every possible effort to stop the ongoing barbaric Zionist aggression on Lebanon, and to protect the Lebanese people from the devastating effects of the aggression.”
The statement of the authority spread like wildfire in various Iraqi circles, and was quickly dubbed the “relief fatwa,” in reference to his famous fatwa “Sufficient Jihad” (2014) that led to the liberation of many areas of Iraq from the control of ISIS.
The head of the Rights Movement, affiliated with the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, Representative Hussein Mounes, took a similar position to the Secretary-General of the Sayyid al-Shuhada Brigades, Abu Alaa al-Walaei, who said in a post on the “X” platform, “The statement of the supreme religious authority in Najaf makes us prepare for a new sufficient jihad fatwa, and we are ready to respond to this call again and again.”
Meanwhile, Secretary-General of the Al-Nujaba Movement Akram al-Kaabi confirmed in a letter of condolence to Nasrallah that “the Islamic resistance in Iraq is continuing its operations within the Iraqi support front in support of Palestine and the resistance in Gaza.”
“Iraq is involved in the conflict.”
Commenting on this, Professor of Political Science Ihsan al-Shammari confirms that Iraq is semi-officially involved in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon, and Israel and Palestine.
“The armed groups have announced since October 7 and beyond that they will continue with the strategy of unity of arenas, through which they targeted the Israeli interior with drones and missiles,” according to al-Shammari.
The Professor of Political Science points out that “Iraq is semi-officially involved in the conflict,” indicating that “the Iraqi armed factions have announced their direct entry into the stand with Hezbollah against the Israeli entity.”
Al-Shammari believes that “Iraq is the most affected after Lebanon in this conflict, especially on the political and security levels.”
The professor of public policy notes that “Israel is trying to impose its conditions, while Iran is in a difficult situation because it wants to proceed with the nuclear file negotiations,” adding: “The region is facing a very major escalation.”
On September 22, 2024, Iraqi factions announced that they had attacked an Israeli target in the Jordan Valley with “Al-Arfed” drones. Air raid sirens sounded in this area and areas in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, as well as in the city of Beisan for the first time since the beginning of the war on Gaza, according to Israeli media.
Meanwhile, the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” announced at dawn on September 25, 2024 that it had attacked what it described as a vital target in northern occupied Palestine with an “Al-Arqab” missile.
An hour earlier, the same armed faction announced that it had attacked another target near the Jordan Valley with a drone, stating that the attack came “in support of our people in Palestine and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against civilians.”
The factions intend to enter the confrontation
For his part, the director of the Al-I’timad Center for Security and Strategic Studies, retired Major General Imad Allou, believes that Iraq’s involvement in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanon depends on the developments on the Lebanese front.
“There are indications that the Iraqi resistance factions intend to participate extensively, whether on the Lebanese front or from within Iraqi territory,” Allou says, adding that “this will make Iraq vulnerable to Israeli and American attacks.”
The security expert touched on the recent position of the religious authority Sistani, saying that it is “clear and precise, which is support and humanitarian assistance to the Lebanese people in their ordeal. If Sistani wanted to push things towards war, he would have issued a fatwa, as happened in 2014 when he issued a fatwa for collective jihad against ISIS.”
