The spread of drug farms in Iraq... a new threat that exacerbates security concerns!

Recent reports indicate the possibility of the spread of illegal farms of narcotic plants in some Iraqi governorates, which raises great concerns about the increasing phenomenon of cultivating prohibited substances in the country.
These concerns come in light of the fragile security situation in Iraq, which may have helped these illegal activities grow in remote areas far from the eyes of the authorities.
Experts believe that this phenomenon may pose a threat to social and economic security, as it contributes to increasing the rate of drug use and drug trafficking inside and outside Iraq. The relevant authorities have called for intensifying efforts to combat and confront these activities by strengthening monitoring and activating appropriate legal procedures against those involved.
The National Security Service recently announced the seizure of 6 farms of the narcotic Datura plant and their on-site destruction in the governorates of Baghdad and Diyala.
The agency stated in a statement that “its detachments in the governorates of Baghdad and Diyala were able, based on confirmed intelligence information and after intensive field follow-up, to seize (6) farms of narcotic plants.”
She added, "These follow-ups resulted in the implementation of raids in accordance with original arrest warrants in the areas of Al-Madain, Al-Bu Aithah, and Balad Ruz, as a result of which (2,305) plants were seized."
The agency confirmed that “the plants were destroyed on site in cooperation with the Agriculture Departments of Al-Dura, Al-Madain, and Baladruz.”
Earlier, the Ministry of Interior revealed the truth about the cultivation and manufacture of drugs in Iraq.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Interior, Brigadier General Muqdad al-Moussawi, said that “the combing and inspection operation that lasted for many months concluded that there were no operations to cultivate or manufacture drugs in Iraq. What is present are drugs smuggled from several countries, some of which are old,” denying “what is rumored from time to time about the cultivation of some narcotic plants in the country.”
He added: “The danger of drugs has decreased significantly, due to the exceptional efforts of the Ministry of Interior’s formations and their activity in tracking down gangs and cells,” noting that “an objective reading of the size of the quantities seized and destroyed from time to time shows the extent of the great efforts being made to protect society from a dangerous scourge.”
In addition, the Director of Media at the General Directorate of Narcotics Control, Hussein Al-Tamimi, said, “The General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances at the Ministry of Interior worked with great intelligence effort during the years 2023 and 2024.”
He added, "Nearly 10,000 drug suspects have been arrested, while judicial rulings have been issued against approximately 5,500 of them since the beginning of this year," noting, "The dismantling of international networks through the exchange of information and the formation of a database through joint international work."
In 2008, a report by The Independent revealed the existence of poppy farms from which heroin is made in Iraq, particularly in the provinces of Diyala and Diwaniyah. In 2016, the Kurdistan Regional Government forces announced the seizure of a drug farm run by 8 foreigners.
